Interested in volunteering on our Trolley service at Dorset County Hospital? We're always looking for new volunteers to join our hardworking team. Please read below to see what would be involved, and if this sounds like something you would like to get involved with then drop us a message using our enquiry form on the volunteering page.
Role of Trolley Volunteer
We have 2 trolleys that go out twice a day on different routes. We always have 2 volunteers on each trolley.
Morning: 8.30am to 10.30 am(ish). and afternoon: 2.00pm to 3.45 pm(ish).
At weekends we have one trolley that goes out in the morning at 8.30am (ish)
Collect and sort newspapers and magazines, check and take off any old magazines BEFORE the trolley round and take them into the Shop.
Take a selection of daily newspapers from the Shop. Unsold newspapers must be returned by 3.45pm to the Shop for the newspaper returns.

Check for patient’s requests
Ensure the trolley is well-stocked; do not over-stock.
It is important to take your time and go into ALL main wards with the trolley.
Initial training is carried out by “Trolley Trainers”. These are long-standing volunteers who will work with you to ensure you are fully trained.
All volunteers will have a local induction with the manager on their first day. You will also need to attend a full induction progamme run by the hospital for all staff and an annual 2 hour refresher training session.
New volunteers will start on the “As and When Rota” to see if they enjoy the work. Then you can either stay on this rota or, if you wish, move to a regular slot either weekly or alternate weeks if a slot is available. The more flexible you can be on the days and times you can work the easier it will be to find you a regular slot.
